THE USUAL
The Usual was a collaboration between BA Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, Essex Council and artists Mark Storor and Sara Cole during March-May 2022. With a focus on a socially engaged practice, the residency facilitated knowledge exchange between a group of students from CSM and the local people of Jaywick. “The priority of the project was to build trust, starting and maintaining conversations, being visible and transparent with your process, testing ideas, images, gestures and exchanges to see what is possible, desirable, and resonant for your own work and the people who engage with it”.
As part of the residency, I facilitated a casting workshop with Inclusion Ventures Centre and created sculptures with the locals in various locations in the town, The communal garden, the local car boot sale and outside the local pub. The sculptures drew Inspiration from garden gnomes and other outdoor decorations most of the locals had in their gardens. Drawing inspiration from ‘Anti-art’ in the process of production and aesthetics, the sculptures subvert the expectations of public art. With the goal of creating a space for conversation, collaboration, and limitless creativity.
